Last Judgment

Last Judgment Sculpture

Built in the 1220s to 1230s, this portal located on the western facade of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, depicts the last judgment as recorded in Matthew. The risen Christ, with the holes in his nail-pieced hands and the wound in his side visible, is seated on his throne of glory. An angel on his right holds nails and a spear, used in the crucifixion. An angel on his left holds the cross. John the Baptist is kneeling in prayer. Below them, an angel, considered to represent the archangel Michael, is weighing the souls of the dead. The criteria, according to Jesus, is our treatment of the hungry, the thirsty, the estranged, the naked, the sick, and the imprisoned. What we do matters to him. The least in the human family is worthy of care. Look at the faces of the people being led to the right and to the left of Christ in this magnificent work of art and/or read Matthew 25:31-40 for the complete story.
