Aylesford Bridge

I wanted to express the peace and tranquility of this quiet, summer day and imagine how many feet, human and animal, have crossed this ancient bridge, in Aylesford, Kent, over the hundreds of years in which it has been in existence!






Sleepy Hamlet

This is a painting of a tiny hamlet, deep in The Cotswolds (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the west of England), which is still untouched by time and is so typical of Old England. I love the subtle light, colours and tracery of the trees in the winter. The Cotwolds is an area of magical uniformity of architecture, where buildings are constructed from honey-coloured limestone. The dry-stone wall is so typical, many were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, so skilfully, as there is no binding agent used. The area became rich, and was famous, for its high-quality wool and there are still many grazing sheep to be seen on the land. This is one of my favourite parts of the UK and brings back many memories.

In Sainte-Chapelle, the royal medieval Gothic chapel built in Paris by Louis IX in 1248 AD, over 1,000 biblical and other religious scenes are pictured in stained glass in fifteen magnificent windows, each fifty feet high. Imaged here is one of the windows and the slender columns which separate them as they soar to the vaulted roof.

Which Is Easier?

A stained glass window in Saint Andrew's Church, which serves the rural parishes of Aldringham and Thorpeness in Suffolk, England, tells the biblical story of four men who brought their paralytic friend to Jesus. Because the house was so crowded, they made a hole in the roof and with ropes lowered the crippled man on his mat down to Jesus. For the whole story, you may want to read Mark 2:1-12. An inscription below the biblical scene reads: This window was placed here in grateful memory of Letitia Caroline Susannah Cannon who died November 8th 1896 aged 81 years, helpless from paralysis during 11 1/2 years. She abounded in most generous gifts to the poor, the church, the churchyard and the endowment.

Pray For Our Sailors

One of the magnificent stained glass windows in Holy Cross Catholic Church in Marine City, Michigan depicts this scene of Jesus who, having seen that his disciples were struggling to row against an adverse wind, has walked on the water to their boat. To them he said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. (See Matthew 14:22-33, Mark, 6:45-52, John 6:16-21.) On one of the small windows below the scene are the words, Pray for our Sailors, which seem especially appropriate because the church is located on the west bank of the St. Clair River, which joins Lake Huron and Lake Erie and carries Great Lakes freighter traffic. Land for Holy Cross Parish was received by Father Gabriel Richard in a grant from President John Quincy Adams on April 1, 1825. The present church building dates from 1903.

This center panel of one of a group of magnificent stained glass windows illustrates the verse from the Bible which reads, "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesars and unto God the things that are Gods" (Matthew 22:21). Located on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, the former St. Andrew's Memorial Episcopal Church, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is now called St. Andrew's Hall and used as a student chapel and for special events.

Healing Images In Stained Glass

Portrayed in stained glass are Elisha, the Old Testament prophet who restored a womans dead son to life; the disciple of Jesus and New Testament gospel writer Luke, called the Beloved Physician by the Apostle Paul; and Albert Schweitzer, 20th century theologian, pastor, medical missionary to Gabon, Africa, and winner of the Nobel Peace prize in 1953. The window is in the former St. Andrew's Memorial Episcopal Church. listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Located on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, it is now called St. Andrew's Hall and used as a student chapel and special events venue.

Costly Devotion

A large stained glass window in St. Vitus Cathedral on Castle Hill in Prague portrays Mary of Bethany anointing the feet of Jesus with costly perfume made of pure nard. She would then wipe his feet with her hair, while her brother Lazarus and sister Martha looked on and Judas Iscariot (seated at table) complained about the extravagance of her devotion. See John 12: 1-8.

Montmartre MartyrbyAnn Horn

Montmartre Martyr

One of the oldest churches in Paris, St. Pierre de Montmartre was founded as a Benedictine abbey in the 12th century by Louis VI and his wife, Adelaide de Savioe, who became its first abbess. The last abbess at the abbey, Marie-Louise de Montmorency-Laval, was guillotined in 1794 during the French Revolution. The stained glass windows in the present day church, of which this photo is one, are from the 20th century.

The basilica of Sacre-Coeur (Sacred Heart) was built on the highest point in Paris as a memorial to French soldiers killed during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). It took 46 years to build and was completed in in 1923.
